Commissioned by the Death Metal band INCANTATION in 2012 for their seventh full length release on Listenable Records, “Vanquish In Vengeance”.
Originally given an impossible 40 hour deadline, the painting was completed in 9 days, with no guidance on the concept aside from some of the album’s lyrics. The concept I intended to illustrate was an attempt at a representation of the way organized religion, represented by the book and the authoritative figure holding it, is a pinnacle of conflict, suffering and chaos.
Since it was left up to me, I chose to do a monochrome image, since the impossible deadline wouldn't allow for a more involved color palette, bright colors being the traditional Death Metal choice.
I included a myself in a cameo on the bottom left of the image, standing among the observers.
The band was divided on whether or not to use the painting at all, however my patron, John McEntee, prevailed. The general “scene” reaction to the painting was also divided, which I was pleased to discover, personally abhorring the mediocrity that would’ve have been more acceptable by a wider, more trend centered audience.
A parody image appeared shortly after the reveal, which featured a beach ball at a hippy concert venue, in place of the book and peasantry of the painting, which as an artist resistant to commercial exposure, was something I was thoroughly proud of and amused with. I intended to include the image here but I couldn't find it anywhere online or in my files unfortunately.
Another point of pride for me is that John McEntee has called "Vanquish in Vengeance" his favorite Incantation release.

This album was an experiment in channeling and possession.
My intentions for doing this work weren’t to inflict “a shotgun blast of evil on the listener”, as has been suggested by some reviewers, it’s for those who seek to understand “evil” in a visceral way, as I’ve interpreted it, without earning the consequences that often come as the prize for pursuing such curiosities. Obviously no bargains for fame and fortune were on the table during the operation, and that never interested me. Nor did the protocols and social mechanisms of “the scene”. I’m not an entertainer and entertainment was never my aim.
FAMINE is my sole contribution the Black Metal Movement and it speaks for itself.
Originally recorded in 2007 at 268 Palisade Avenue, apt 3h Jersey City, New Jersey.
